Alkem Laboratories has launched Semaglutide injection in India under three brand names – Semasize, Obesema and Hepaglide – for treating type-2 diabetes and chronic weight management. The product is available as a pre-filled disposable injection pen at INR 1,800 per month, translating to a weekly cost of INR 450, with a reusable pen option also offered for higher maintenance doses. The launch follows approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) after Phase 3 clinical trials conducted in India. Semaglutide is the same molecule sold globally as Ozempic/Wegovy by Novo Nordisk and is one of the fastest-growing therapies in the diabetes and obesity segment.
Positive for the company – entry into the high-demand GLP-1 obesity/diabetes space with an affordable indigenously-developed product could drive incremental revenue and strengthen Alkem's chronic therapy portfolio.
