Astra Microwave Products has announced that its Board has given in-principle approval to demerge its Space, Meteorology and Hydrology business into a new separately listed company called Astra Space Technologies Private Limited (ASTPL). Post-demerger, Astra Microwave will become a pure-play Defence and Aerospace company, while ASTPL will house the space, meteorology, and hydrology businesses with mirror shareholding identical to Astra. ASTPL is proposed to be listed on both BSE and NSE, with the company aiming to complete the transaction by Q1 FY28, subject to regulatory approvals. The press release highlights the strong order book being transferred: cumulative ISRO-related orders of over ₹750 crore with an additional ₹250 crore to be executed by FY28, plus ₹330+ crore in executed meteorology and hydrology contracts and an order book of ₹285 crore to be executed by FY28. The company expects the demerger to be value-accretive over the medium to long term through focused capital allocation and operational efficiencies.
Shareholders will eventually receive shares in the new ASTPL entity in proportion to their existing Astra holdings, giving them exposure to two focused listed companies (Defence/Aerospace and Space/Weather). Short-term, the stock could see volatility as the share exchange ratio and structure are finalised; longer-term, the demerger may unlock value by allowing each business to attract sector-specific capital and talent.
