Balrampur Chini Mills held a conference call to discuss updates on its PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastics project and capital raising plans. The PLA project cost has increased by INR 230 crore to INR 3,080 crore due to forex movements, supply chain disruptions, and engineering refinements, with management confirming this is the final revision and commissioning remains on track for Q3. The board has also approved a new INR 160 crore lactogypsum processing plant at Kumbhi to convert the PLA by-product into gypsum boards with revenue potential of INR 150 crore and a 5-year payback. To fund these initiatives, the company will raise INR 450 crore via preferential allotment at INR 483 per share (5% dilution), with promoters participating to maintain their 43% stake. Management also indicated openness to eventually offloading its NBFC subsidiary Auxilo.
The INR 450 crore equity raise will dilute existing shareholders by 5%, though promoter participation limits downside. The PLA cost overrun signals near-term margin pressure from project execution, while the gypsum board initiative offers a new revenue stream from what would otherwise be waste.
