A premier government institution under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers conducted a scientific study showing that Polylactic Acid (PLA) microplastics degrade safely in Indian soil conditions. Over 180 days, PLA microplastics reduced drastically from 287 to just 18 particles per kilogram, indicating near-complete natural degradation. Conventional plastics showed almost no reduction, remaining in soil after 6 months. The study also confirmed no toxic residue from PLA and that earthworms can process it safely. This provides scientific validation for PLA as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. Balrampur Chini Mills is setting up India's 1st PLA plant with 80,000 TPA capacity.
This study provides scientific backing for PLA as an environmentally safe material, which strengthens the business case for Balrampur Chini Mills' upcoming PLA plant. Positive for the company's diversification into bioplastics as sustainability regulations tighten in India.
