BPCL has successfully commissioned its Second-Generation (2G) Bioethanol Refinery at Bargarh, Odisha. The plant will produce 100 kilolitres per day of fuel-grade bioethanol from rice straw using advanced lignocellulosic technology. It is designed as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The project supports India's E20 Ethanol Blending Programme and the National Biofuels Policy. The refinery was completed safely, achieving around 20 million LTA-free (lost-time accident-free) manhours during construction.
This commissioning strengthens BPCL's clean energy portfolio and aligns with government biofuel blending targets, potentially providing a new revenue stream from sustainable fuels. For shareholders, it signals progress on the company's diversification into green energy, though the relatively small 100 KL/day capacity means limited immediate impact on overall earnings.
