Bihar Sponge Iron Limited has informed the BSE that its Writ Petition (WPC/24721 of 2025) against South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) was dismissed by the Hon'ble High Court of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur on 27 October 2025. The case relates to a disputed penalty of Rs. 215.28 Lacs (about Rs. 2.15 crore) over alleged short lifting of coal in FY 2011-12 under a Fuel Supply Agreement. The Company had earlier tried to settle the matter through a meeting with SECL's General Manager (Marketing & Sales), but its concerns were not addressed, prompting the second petition which has now been dismissed. The Company has stated it will continue to explore further legal options in consultation with its legal advisors. Management has clarified that, given the size of its operations, the matter is not expected to have a material financial impact.
The court ruling goes against the Company, removing one avenue to challenge the coal penalty. However, since the disputed amount is small relative to the Company's scale and further legal action is still being pursued, the likely impact on shareholders and stock price is limited in the near term.
