Biocon Limited has successfully completed a Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP), raising Rs 4,500 crore (about USD 523 million) by issuing 13.63 crore equity shares at Rs 330 per share to institutional investors. This is the company's first equity fundraise since its IPO in 2004. The issue opened on June 16 and closed on June 19, 2025, attracting strong demand from top domestic mutual funds, insurance companies, and foreign institutional investors including SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Life Insurance, BlackRock, and Government Pension Fund Global. The proceeds will be used mainly to buy back optionally convertible debentures issued by subsidiary Biocon Biologics from Goldman Sachs AIF schemes, repay existing borrowings, and for general corporate purposes. Post-issue promoter shareholding stands at 54.45%.
The fundraise strengthens Biocon's balance sheet and reduces debt obligations at its Biocon Biologics subsidiary, which may improve financial flexibility. The dilution from new shares means existing shareholders now own a smaller percentage of the company, though the Rs 325 per share premium pricing suggests strong institutional confidence in the stock's value.
