BSE has informed the exchange that SEBI has approved BSE's proposal to shift the expiry day for equity derivatives contracts from Tuesday to Thursday. Existing contracts will keep their current expiry day, except long-dated index options, which BSE will realign as per past practice. New derivative contracts expiring on or before August 31, 2025 will continue with the present expiry day, while new contracts expiring on or after September 1, 2025 will expire on Thursday, with monthly contracts set to expire on the last Thursday of the month. Additionally, no fresh weekly index futures contracts will be introduced from July 1, 2025. A detailed SEBI circular outlining operational modalities will be issued separately.
This is a procedural shift in derivatives expiry scheduling, not a direct financial event for BSE shareholders. Aligning expiry to Thursday may help consolidate trading volumes and liquidity over time, but near-term impact is limited until the new contracts kick in from September 2025.
