Canara Bank reported Q1 FY26 net profit of ₹4,752 Cr, up 21.69% year-on-year, driven by 12.32% growth in operating profit to ₹8,554 Cr. Global business grew 10.98% YoY to ₹25.64 lakh Cr, with advances up 12.42% and deposits up 9.92%. Asset quality improved sharply with Gross NPA falling to 2.69% (down 145 bps YoY) and Net NPA at 0.63%, while Provision Coverage Ratio strengthened to 93.17%. Retail loans surged 33.92% YoY, and EPS rose to ₹21.01. However, Net Interest Margin (NIM) compressed to 2.55% from 2.90% a year ago, falling short of the 2.75–2.80% FY26 guidance. Digital transactions and UPI registrations also grew significantly during the quarter.
Strong profit growth and improving asset quality are positive for shareholders, but the NIM miss versus management's own guidance is a concern, signalling continued margin pressure. The stock may react mixedly—rewarded for earnings beat and asset quality, but watched closely on margin trajectory.
