Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) has announced the voluntary winding up of its step-down German subsidiary, CUMI Awuko Abrasives GmbH (CAAG), which manufactures coated abrasives for wood and leather applications. The subsidiary, originally acquired in February 2022 through an insolvency process, has been facing continued underperformance, mounting losses, global overcapacity, low utilisation, and high input costs due to geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures. The estimated financial impact on CUMI is Rs. 110–130 crores, subject to change based on asset realisations. CAAG contributed Rs. 93 crores in revenue (1.9% of consolidated revenue) and had a net worth of Rs. 74 crores in FY25. The company has clarified that CAAG is not a material subsidiary and the winding down will not adversely affect its overall business operations.
This is a write-off of a non-core, loss-making overseas unit, which could lead to a one-time charge of Rs. 110–130 crores. While negative on a near-term basis, the move is unlikely to materially hurt the stock since CAAG contributes less than 2% of consolidated revenue and the company has signalled this is a controlled, non-disruptive exit.
