Shri P.M. Prasad has stepped down as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Limited with effect from November 1, 2025, after attaining the age of superannuation (retirement). In his place, Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha, an IAS officer currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, has been given the additional charge of CMD for an initial period of 3 months, starting November 1, 2025, or until a regular appointee is named. Jha holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from Delhi University, an MSc in Public Policy & Management from King's College London, and has completed the Advanced Management Programme at ISB. The company confirmed he is not related to any existing director and is not debarred by SEBI from holding a directorship.
The change is part of a routine leadership transition at the Maharatna PSU, but the temporary (3-month) additional-charge arrangement — rather than a permanent CMD appointment — may keep the stock mildly range-bound until a regular full-time chairman is announced. Overall, the impact on shareholders is expected to be neutral.
