The President of India, acting through the Ministry of Coal and holding the position of promoter in Coal India Ltd, has launched an Offer for Sale (OFS) through the stock exchange mechanism. The base offer consists of 61,627,283 equity shares representing 1.00% of the total paid-up equity share capital. The seller has exercised the oversubscription option to additionally offer another 61,627,283 shares, bringing the total offer size to 123,254,566 equity shares (2.00% of total paid-up capital). The T-day (May 27, 2026) was for non-retail investors only, while T+1 day (May 29, 2026) is for retail investors, employees, and non-retail investors carrying forward un-allotted bids. About 10% of the offer (12,325,458 shares) is reserved for retail category, and up to 25,000 shares are offered to eligible employees.
This OFS by the government promoter reduces its stake by 2%, which may create slight selling pressure on the stock in the short term. However, since it is a relatively small portion (2%) and the government remains the majority promoter, the long-term impact on shareholders should be minimal. The retail reservation provides an opportunity for small investors to participate.
