CreditAccess Grameen, India's largest NBFC-MFI, has secured a USD 100 million multi-currency syndicated social loan facility in Japanese Yen and US Dollars, qualifying as an External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) under the RBI's automatic route. The facility was initially launched at USD 70 million in November 2024 and was oversubscribed, resulting in an upsize to USD 100 million from 7 banks across South Asia and the Far East. Standard Chartered Bank acted as the mandated lead arranger for the second time, having previously arranged the company's USD 200 million syndicated ECB in 2023. The loan adheres to the Social Loan Principles 2023 with a Sustainalytics second-party opinion, and the all-in borrowing cost is competitive — lower than the company's average cost of borrowing. Proceeds will fund eligible social projects aligned with the company's mission.
This is a positive development for shareholders — the company has raised cheaper foreign currency debt with strong oversubscription, reflecting lender confidence. It supports CA Grameen's target of 25-30% foreign borrowings by FY28, diversifies its liability profile, and reduces overall funding costs, which should improve net interest margins over time.
