Exide Industries has invested an additional Rs. 80 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary Exide Energy Solutions Limited (EESL) by subscribing to 2 crore equity shares at Rs. 40 each (Rs. 10 face value + Rs. 30 premium) on a rights basis. This takes EIL's total investment in EESL to Rs. 3,882.23 crore, with EIL continuing to hold 100% stake. EESL, which manufactures lithium-ion battery cells, modules, and packs for the EV market, is currently setting up a greenfield plant in Bengaluru and this fresh capital will fund that project. EESL reported a turnover of Rs. 116.89 crore and a loss after tax of Rs. 209.12 crore for FY25, with a net worth of Rs. 2,738.06 crore.
This is a routine further capital infusion into Exide's EV battery subsidiary and does not change EIL's ownership. Shareholders should note that EESL remains loss-making and continues to require funding for its Bengaluru greenfield plant, meaning further capital raises in EESL are likely. The long-term bet is on India's lithium-ion battery opportunity, but near-term it represents ongoing cash outflow from the parent.
