GAIL (India) Limited has approved setting up of 700 MW solar power projects at a total investment of Rs. 3,800 crore across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The plan includes a 600 MW solar project with a 550 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, UP, which will supply captive power to GAIL's Petrochemical Plant at Pata in Auraiya district. Additionally, a 100 MW solar project with a 22 MWh BESS will be set up in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, Maharashtra, to serve the captive needs of GAIL's PDH-PP Plant at Usar in Raigad district. The move is aimed at supporting GAIL's Net Zero targets and India's energy transition goals. Once commissioned, GAIL's installed renewable energy capacity will rise from the current 147 MW to over 1,000 MW.
This is a significant green capex commitment that boosts GAIL's renewable energy footprint and supports long-term energy security, but the Rs. 3,800 crore outlay is meaningful and will be watched for execution timelines and return on investment. Positive for the stock's ESG narrative and long-term sustainability story.
