Medanta's board approved a ~Rs. 550 crore investment to set up a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in central Varanasi through a built-to-suit lease with Shripal Hospitality; the partner will build the civil structure while Medanta funds interiors, fit-outs, and medical equipment, with completion expected in about 4 years. The board also cleared a Rs. 322 crore medical college project, which will now be set up directly by the company (instead of the earlier Section 8 subsidiary) following revised NMC rules allowing companies to run medical colleges. Total combined new capex commitment is around Rs. 872 crores, to be funded through a mix of internal accruals and debt. Existing capacity is 3,579 beds across six hospitals, so Varanasi adds roughly 11% to Medanta's bed count and lifts its Uttar Pradesh presence to about 1,900 beds (Lucknow, Noida, Varanasi).
A meaningful, growth-oriented capacity push into an underserved market that strengthens Medanta's UP dominance, but the 4-year build-out and debt component may weigh on near-term returns; share-price reaction likely mildly positive on long-term growth visibility.
