Medanta's board approved two strategic expansions. First, it will now apply directly (instead of through a Section 8 subsidiary) to set up a medical college, taking advantage of revised NMC rules that let any company establish medical colleges. The medical college project is estimated at Rs. 322 crores. Second, the company signed a definitive build-to-suit and lease agreement with Shripal Hospitality to develop a 400+ bed multi-specialty hospital in Varanasi, UP, with Medanta's own investment estimated at Rs. 550 crores (interior fit-outs, medical equipment, deposits). The hospital is expected to be ready in about 4 years. With this addition, Medanta's combined UP capacity will rise to roughly 1,900 beds, complementing its existing hospitals in Lucknow (950 beds) and Noida (550 beds). Both projects will be funded through a mix of internal accruals and debt.
This is a meaningful capacity expansion of about 11% (400 new beds on the existing 3,579 base) into an underserved market in eastern Uttar Pradesh, supporting long-term growth. However, the combined ~Rs. 872 crore capex, funded partly by debt, could pressure near-term debt levels and margins. Overall, the announcement reinforces Medanta's expansion story in India's most populous state.
