On 26 September 2025, around 5 PM, a refractory wall of the travel grate collapsed at GPIL's iron ore pellet plant in Siltara Industrial Area, Raipur during routine inspection. The accident killed 6 employees and injured 6 others; 1 injured has been discharged and 5 are stable, expected to be discharged within a week. Operations of this pellet plant will remain shut until the internal enquiry is complete and the refractory lining is reset. The company clarified that its other plants — a second pellet plant, DRI, and SMS — are running without interruption. The plant is fully insured, though the exact loss quantum is not yet known and will be shared later. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh per deceased employee and Rs 5–10 lakh to injured employees will be paid under group insurance policies.
This is a negative event — a fatal accident, plant shutdown, and pending loss quantum will likely weigh on the stock in the short term. Financial impact depends on how long the pellet plant stays shut and insurance recovery, which the company has yet to disclose.
