Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd (HOCL) has temporarily shut down its Phenol Plant at the Kochi unit in Kerala from 14th March 2026 afternoon, following the discontinuation of LPG supply by BPCL, its bulk LPG supplier. BPCL stopped supply in compliance with a Government of India directive requiring public sector oil companies to supply LPG exclusively to domestic consumers. Since LPG is the primary feedstock for the Phenol Plant, the disruption has forced a temporary shutdown, which the company has classified as a force majeure event beyond its control. The Hydrogen Peroxide plant at the same location will continue normal operations. The financial impact of the shutdown cannot be estimated at present, and the company will provide further updates on resumption.
This is negative for shareholders as the Phenol, Acetone, and Hydrogen Peroxide operations are a key revenue source, and the duration of the shutdown is uncertain. However, only the Phenol Plant is affected while the Hydrogen Peroxide plant continues, partially limiting the damage.
