HPCL has commissioned a new Residue Upgradation Facility (RUF) of 3.55 MMTPA capacity at its 15 MMTPA Visakh Refinery. The RUF uses advanced LC-Max residue hydrocracking technology — claimed to be the world's first — and converts about 93% of bottom oils into high-value products. The facility is expected to boost the refinery's distillate yield by up to 10% and significantly improve Gross Refining Margins (GRMs) through a superior product mix and flexibility to process heavier crudes. The Nelson Complexity Index of the Visakh Refinery rises to 11.6, placing it among India's most advanced deep-conversion refineries. HPCL expects the higher middle-distillate output to reduce its HSD marketing-refining gap, lower dependence on external sourcing, and drive better profitability.
This commissioning strengthens HPCL's refining margins, supply chain self-sufficiency, and long-term profitability. Positive for shareholders as it signals operational upgrade and earnings potential, though near-term stock reaction may be modest without disclosed capex or payback details.
