Indian Energy Exchange reported a monthly electricity traded volume of 10,946 MU in May 2025, up 14% year-on-year. The Real-Time Market (RTM) hit a record high of 4,770 MU, growing 42% YoY, while the Term-Ahead Market rose 38% YoY to 1,684 MU. However, the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) fell 20% YoY to 3,510 MU. Prices dropped sharply, with DAM clearing at Rs 4.12/unit (down 22% YoY) and RTM at Rs 3.43/unit (down 28% YoY), driven by lower demand from unseasonal rains, early monsoon, and higher supply from hydro, wind and thermal generation. Green Market volumes grew 47% YoY to 915 MU, and 17.43 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates were traded, up 65% YoY. India's overall energy consumption fell 4% YoY to 148.7 BUs.
Mixed signals for shareholders — strong YoY growth in total volumes, RTM, Green Market and RECs is positive, but a 20% YoY drop in DAM volumes and sharp price declines may pressure trading revenues and transaction fee income.
