IRFC has committed ₹4,000 crore in loan assistance to Talcher Fertilizers Limited (TFL) as part of a consortium of lenders funding India's first coal gasification-based urea production facility. The total debt package for the project amounts to ₹12,250 crore. The Talcher (Odisha) plant, a joint venture of Coal India, GAIL, RCF, and FCIL, will produce 1.27 million metric tonnes of neem-coated urea annually, reducing India's dependence on imported natural gas. The project has strong railway linkages, with a dedicated siding being developed under Indian Railways' Gati Shakti GCT policy, expected to handle about 5 rakes per day. IRFC, recently accorded Navratna status, highlighted that this fits its expanded mandate as a diversified infrastructure financier for projects with railway linkages.
This expands IRFC's loan portfolio beyond core railway financing into fertilizer/infrastructure, which is positive for revenue diversification but adds exposure to a new sector. The ₹4,000 crore deal is sizeable and aligns with the government's infrastructure push, likely to be viewed positively by investors given IRFC's zero-NPA track record.
