Jindal Stainless has developed India's first stainless steel rail container designed specifically for transporting salt, in partnership with Indian Railways. The 20-foot container is built entirely from stainless steel — SS 304 grade for the corrosion-prone body and JT Grade for the underframe and stiffeners. A prototype was successfully trialed for loading and unloading at Bhimasar, Gandhidham (Gujarat) on February 10, 2026, and meets RDSO specifications. Each container weighs 3 tonnes empty and can carry 33 tonnes of salt, with a full rake of 96 containers moving about 3,300 tonnes — equal to roughly 100 road trucks. These containers are expected to last 15–20 years, about 6–7 times longer than conventional ones, with far lower maintenance needs. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw publicly highlighted the development, and the product aligns with the Make in India push.
