Akzo Nobel India has won an appeal at the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), Chandigarh, regarding a 2021 tax demand from the Central Excise and Service Tax Department, Mohali. The original order from March 2021 had disallowed the company's use of Education Cess and Secondary Higher Education Cess for the 2015-2017 period and demanded Rs 5.58 lakhs in tax along with interest and penalty. In its appeal order dated July 9, 2025 (received on August 12, 2025), CESTAT fully set aside the demand including interest and penalty, granting total relief of Rs 11.19 lakhs plus additional interest. The original demand order now stands completely annulled, closing this long-pending dispute in the company's favour.
Positive but small — a legacy tax liability is fully resolved in the company's favour, removing any overhang from this dispute. Given the modest amount involved, the financial impact on earnings is minor, but it eliminates a pending litigation item from the books.
