JSW Steel has announced the Minas de Revuboè (MdR) coking coal mining project in the Moatize basin of Tete Province, Mozambique, in a ceremony attended by Mozambique's President and the Indian High Commissioner. The project has 850 million tonnes of total reserves with the potential to yield 250 million tonnes of usable coking coal, with the first phase expected within 2.5 years to produce 2.4 mtpa of prime hard coking coal. The mine is strategically located about 450 km from Beira Port and 900 km from Nacala Port, giving it strong logistics access for shipping to Indian steel plants. The project is a key part of JSW Steel's backward integration strategy, aimed at securing long-term raw material supply and reducing exposure to volatile global coking coal prices. It supports JSW Steel's growth plans to scale capacity to 50 mtpa by 2030 from the current 35.7 MTPA consolidated capacity.
This is a positive long-term strategic move for shareholders, as securing captive overseas coking coal supply should help stabilize input costs and protect margins from global price swings. However, benefits will accrue gradually over the 2.5-year first-phase development and depend on execution and logistics costs.
