MMTC Ltd reported standalone profit after tax of Rs. 212.07 crore for FY 2025-26, a significant increase from Rs. 69.53 crore in the previous year. However, this profit was largely driven by exceptional items totaling Rs. 473.70 crore, primarily including Rs. 411.76 crore from NINL divestment proceeds received in July 2025 and Rs. 13.21 crore from confiscated gold jewellery. Total income declined to Rs. 180.58 crore from Rs. 262.78 crore in the previous year. The auditors issued a qualified opinion due to the company's failure to recognize a provision of Rs. 82.82 crore for the Anglo Coal case, instead classifying it as a contingent liability. A material uncertainty exists regarding going concern as the government has directed MMTC to prepare a roadmap for scaling down operations and exiting joint ventures.
The qualified audit opinion and going concern uncertainty are significant red flags. The apparent profit surge is misleading as it relies heavily on one-time exceptional items. Shareholders should be cautious as the core trading business is shrinking and the company faces potential liquidation or major restructuring under government directives.
