MCX has received approval from SEBI to launch Electricity Derivatives, marking a major milestone in India's energy trading landscape. The new contracts will allow power generators, distribution companies, and large consumers to hedge against electricity price volatility and manage risk more effectively. The move has the backing of both SEBI and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). MD & CEO Praveena Rai said the product offers a regulated, transparent platform to manage increasingly dynamic power prices driven by renewables and market reforms. MCX already commands about 98% market share in India's commodity futures trade by value in FY25.
This expands MCX's product portfolio into a new and high-potential segment, potentially driving higher trading volumes and revenue growth. For shareholders, it signals business diversification and alignment with India's renewable energy push, which could support long-term valuation.
