NHPC Limited, a government-owned hydropower company, has raised Rs. 2,000 crore through the issuance of 7.67% AI Series Bonds 2041 on a private placement basis. The bonds are listed, unsecured, non-cumulative, non-convertible, redeemable, and taxable. The issue was completed on 29 May 2026, with 2,00,000 bonds of Rs. 1 lakh each. The bonds carry a 15-year tenor with annual coupon payments, and principal repayment structured across 10 annual STRPPs (Structured Rupee Payment Parts) beginning from year 6 through year 15, with Rs. 200 crore repaid each year. The bonds will be listed on the Wholesale Debt Market segments of both BSE and NSE. The coupon rate of 7.67% p.a. reflects a uniform rate across all investor categories with no special rights or security attached.
This is a debt-raising exercise by a PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) and has no direct impact on equity shareholders. The ₹2,000 crore inflow strengthens NHPC's balance sheet and funds its capex requirements. Since the bonds are non-convertible, there is no equity dilution. The 7.67% coupon is in line with current PSU bond yields and does not signal financial stress.
