NHPC has informed the stock exchanges that the Arbitral Tribunal has pronounced its award in the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project arbitration in favor of HCC (Hindustan Construction Company). The award, dated 21 February 2026, requires NHPC to pay Rs 227.82 Crore along with EUR 26,66,029, pre-reference and pendent-lite interest at 10.40% per annum, arbitration costs of Rs 1.57 Crore plus USD 10,000, and future interest at 12.40% per annum. The dispute relates to civil works construction, including claims on bank guarantee encashment, price adjustments, tax demands, and additional works. NHPC's own counter-claims of Rs 738.67 Crore are still pending and arguments on those will commence next. The company is currently examining the award.
Negative for NHPC shareholders in the near term — a confirmed cash outflow of over Rs 227 Crore plus interest and arbitration costs. However, the larger Rs 738.67 Crore counter-claim by NHPC is still pending and could partially offset the loss if successful. Watch for further updates on the counter-claim hearings.
