NSE has partnered with Augmont Enterprises to expand the Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) ecosystem, aiming to monetise India estimated 30,000-35,000 tonnes of household gold through an exchange-regulated platform for trading, pledging, redemption and lending. The initiative could channel domestically held gold to jewellery manufacturers via the Securities Lending and Borrowing mechanism, potentially easing pressure on India's $71.98 billion gold import bill (9.2% of total merchandise imports in FY26) and the current account deficit. Augmont will leverage its 4.2 crore registered users, nearly 5,000 jewellers, 4,600-plus retail touchpoints and 80-plus Gold For All stores to support EGR creation, redemption, delivery, liquidity and price discovery.
