NTPC's Board has approved two major investments on 28th March 2026. First, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project with 4.70 GWh capacity at an estimated cost of Rs. 5,821.90 Crore. Second, an additional equity commitment of Rs. 3,173.67 Crore in Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL), its existing 50:50 joint venture with UPRVUNL, for setting up Meja Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II (3x800 MW). This will take NTPC's total equity commitment in MUNPL to Rs. 5,000 Crore, with the infusion subject to matching contribution from UPRVUNL. MUNPL had a turnover of Rs. 5,099 Crore in FY 2024-25 and currently operates Meja Stage-I (2x660 MW). The ownership structure remains unchanged at 50:50, and the project is targeted for completion by FY 2029-30.
This signals NTPC's continued expansion in both thermal power capacity and energy storage, strengthening its long-term revenue pipeline. Shareholders should view this as a positive capacity addition move, though it involves significant capital outlay of nearly Rs. 9,000 Crore combined.
