On March 28, 2026, NTPC's board approved two major investment proposals. First, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project with 4.70 GWh capacity at an estimated cost of Rs. 5,821.90 Crore. Second, an additional equity commitment of Rs. 3,173.67 Crore in Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL), its 50:50 joint venture with UPRVUNL, for setting up the Meja Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II (3x800 MW). This takes NTPC's total equity commitment in MUNPL to Rs. 5,000 Crore, contingent on matching equity from UPRVUNL. The Meja Stage-II project is targeted for completion by 2029-30. MUNPL, which currently operates Meja Stage-I (2x660 MW), reported a turnover of Rs. 5,099 Crore in FY25.
The combined investments of nearly Rs. 9,000 Crore reinforce NTPC's growth pipeline across both thermal and energy storage segments, supporting long-term capacity addition. For shareholders, this signals continued capex commitment aligned with India's energy transition, though execution timelines and project economics will be key to watch.
