Premier Energies has signed a 74:26 joint venture with Taiwan-based Sino-American Silicon Products Inc. (SAS) to set up a 2 GW per annum solar wafer manufacturing plant in India. The plant will slice polysilicon ingots into silicon wafers used in photovoltaic cells and modules, marking Premier Energies' backward integration into the wafer segment. SAS, whose subsidiary GlobalWafers is the world's third-largest semiconductor silicon wafer manufacturer, brings advanced technical expertise, while Premier Energies contributes its large-scale manufacturing capabilities. Premier Energies currently has 11.1 GW of total solar cell and module capacity (including 5.8 GW under construction). The JV aligns with India's Make-in-India policy and aims to strengthen the domestic solar supply chain.
This is a positive development — backward integration into wafers can improve margins and supply chain control, while partnering with a global technology leader reduces execution risk. Shareholders may view this as a long-term growth catalyst, though the plant's actual contribution will depend on commissioning timelines and market conditions.
