Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) received a favorable order from the Supreme Court of India on March 24, 2026, in a long-pending excise dispute covering the period 1996 to 2005. The court set aside the original orders dated January 27, 2010 and February 4, 2010, along with the CESTAT order, related to alleged diversion of Naphtha for non-fertilizer use. The total disputed amount was Rs 32.94 crore, comprising Rs 9.66 crore in tax, Rs 18.61 crore in interest, and Rs 4.67 crore in penalty. With this ruling, RCF is relieved of this potential liability after a legal battle spanning over two decades.
This is a positive outcome for RCF shareholders, as it eliminates a potential liability of nearly Rs 33 crore that had been hanging over the company for more than 20 years. The removal of this contingent liability removes a long-standing overhang and may improve investor sentiment.
