Reliance Infrastructure-promoted Reliance Defence has signed a strategic partnership with Coastal Mechanics Inc. (CMI), a US Department of Defense authorised contractor, to tap India's INR 20,000 crore defence MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) and upgrade market. The partnership will cover end-to-end MRO and upgrade services for 100+ Jaguar fighter aircraft, 100+ MiG-29 fighter aircraft, the fleet of Apache attack helicopters, L-70 air defence guns, and other legacy platforms. The two companies will also set up a Joint Venture at MIHAN in Maharashtra to serve both Indian and export markets. Reliance Defence has stated its ambition to become one of India's top three defence exporters. The move aligns with the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives aimed at reducing defence import dependence.
This expands Reliance Infrastructure's defence footprint beyond existing manufacturing into the higher-margin, long-duration MRO and upgrade segment, opening access to multi-year defence contracts. While the INR 20,000 crore opportunity is significant on paper, near-term stock impact may be limited as Reliance Defence is a promoted entity rather than a direct subsidiary, and execution timelines remain to be seen.
