Sebi asks depositories to put in place operational framework to implement buyback rules from Aug 1

Sebi has directed depositories to put in place an operational framework by August 1, 2026 to implement the amended buyback regulations notified on July 1, 2026. The framework covers ISIN-level freeze on promoter and promoter group holdings from board or shareholder approval of a buyback until its closure, with two exceptions: promoters may tender shares in tender-offer route buybacks, and pre-existing encumbrances may be invoked or released. The freeze will continue to apply to invoked or released shares in such cases.
