The Royal Government of Bhutan and the World Bank have signed financing agreements totaling $515 million for Bhutan's 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project. Tata Power holds a 40% stake in the Special Purpose Vehicle (Dorjilung Hydro Power Limited), with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation holding the remaining 60%. The $1.7 billion project will generate over 4,500 GWh of clean electricity annually, with nearly 80% supplied to India to meet rising peak demand. The financing includes $300 million from IDA (with $150 million as grant), $215 million from IBRD, and up to $300 million from IFC. The project is expected to account for about one-third of Bhutan's total energy generation and increase Bhutan's GDP by 2.4%, while displacing 3.3 million tons of CO2 annually.
This strengthens Tata Power's clean energy portfolio and regional presence, with guaranteed power supply to India from a large hydropower project. The 40% stake in the SPV provides long-term revenue visibility and supports India's clean energy cooperation with Bhutan while advancing regional energy security.
