Tata Steel has received a favourable order from the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) dated February 20, 2026, in a long-pending tax dispute. The case relates to the disallowance of a ₹518.76 crore interest expenditure claim under Section 36(1)(iii) of the Income Tax Act for FY2008, linked to borrowings used for the Corus Group Plc acquisition. The total tax exposure across FY2008 to FY2015 stood at approximately ₹1,901 crore. With this favourable order, the tax exposure for the company reduces from ~₹1,901 crore to ~₹1,686 crore. Tata Steel expects this ruling to have a persuasive impact on similar pending litigations for FY2009 to FY2015, which could further reduce the remaining exposure.
This is a positive development for Tata Steel shareholders as it reduces contingent tax liability by roughly ₹215 crore for FY2008 alone and could lead to further reductions in subsequent years. The favourable ruling strengthens the company's position and may modestly improve earnings clarity.
