Tata Steel has officially broken ground on a new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at its Port Talbot site in the UK, with Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, MD & CEO T.V. Narendran, and UK CEO Rajesh Nair attending the ceremony alongside UK government ministers. The project is part of a £1.25 billion green steelmaking transformation, supported by £500 million in UK Government funding, and is the largest such investment in the UK steel industry in a generation. The new EAF, set to be commissioned by end of 2027, will be one of the largest in the world, producing 3 million tonnes of steel annually using UK-sourced scrap, and is expected to cut Port Talbot's carbon emissions by roughly 90% (about 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, or 50 million tonnes over the next decade). The project will secure 5,000 direct UK jobs, with main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and technology partners Tenova, ABB, and Clecim involved in construction. Tata Steel has already ceased ironmaking at Port Talbot in October 2024 and is currently importing slab and hot rolled coil to support its UK operations until the EAF is operational.
This milestone reinforces Tata Steel's commitment to its net-zero by 2045 target and its long-term UK presence, which may support its ESG credentials and access to government-backed funding. Execution risk and the multi-year capex timeline mean the financial benefits will accrue gradually, with the real impact on earnings and cash flows expected only after commissioning in late 2027.
