Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements with SMS Group (Paul Wurth, S.A.) to deploy the world's first EASyMelt (electrically-assisted syngas smelter) technology at its Jamshedpur Works. The technology will be installed on the 'E' Blast Furnace (649 m3) and is expected to cut CO2 emissions by over 50% compared to current operations. Tata Steel and SMS Group had signed an MoU in June 2023 and completed a front-end loading study before proceeding with this industrial demonstration. This is a phased project representing a key milestone in Tata Steel's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
This partnership positions Tata Steel as a leader in green steel technology and supports its ESG credentials and long-term sustainability targets. While immediate financial impact is minimal, the initiative reduces regulatory and climate-related risks while enhancing Tata Steel's appeal to ESG-focused investors.
