Tata Steel has inaugurated Phase II of its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, raising annual crude steel capacity from 3 million tonnes to 8 million tonnes per annum. The expansion involved an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and adds a new blast furnace — the largest in India at 5,870 m³ — along with a pellet plant, coke plant, and cold rolling mill. The facility will produce advanced high-strength steels for sectors like automotive, infrastructure, defence, power, and shipbuilding, supporting the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. With this, Odisha has become Tata Steel's single largest investment destination. The event was attended by the Odisha Chief Minister and Tata Steel's CEO T. V. Narendran.
The near-doubling of integrated steel capacity at Kalinganagar should support volume growth and product-mix improvement for Tata Steel, potentially boosting revenues and margins over the medium term. The Rs 27,000 crore capex signals strong long-term confidence but may keep near-term debt and depreciation elevated.
