United Spirits Limited has received a water charges demand of INR 441.95 crore from the Maharashtra Water Resources Department (WRD) for the period November 2018 to February 2026. The demand was issued despite the Water Resources Department failing to comply with the Bombay High Court's directions regarding Principles of Natural Justice, including not granting a hearing to the Company. The Company challenged this demand by filing a Writ Petition before the Bombay High Court. The Supreme Court of India, on 12th May 2026, granted interim protection by requiring USL to deposit INR 50 crore with the Court (not WRD) within four weeks, during which WRD is restrained from taking any coercive action. The Company, based on advice from external counsel, believes it has a good case on merits and does not expect any material financial implications.
While a significant INR 441.95 crore demand has been raised, the Supreme Court's interim order provides temporary relief. The case remains pending adjudication, and the Company's assessment of no material financial impact will depend on the final outcome of the litigation.
