US House passes stopgap funding bill to avert shutdown before midterm elections

The US House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill by a 220-205 largely party-line vote to avert a government shutdown ahead of midterm elections. The continuing resolution will maintain federal agencies at current spending levels until early December. The bill now moves to the Senate and was advanced unusually early, more than two months before the September 30 funding deadline.
