Utkarsh Small Finance Bank reported a sharp swing to a loss of ₹239 crore in Q1 FY26 from a profit of ₹137 crore in the same quarter last year. Pre-provisioning operating profit fell 71% YoY to ₹92 crore as net interest income dropped 30% to ₹402 crore amid margin compression (NIM down from 9.4% to 5.9%) and rising costs. Gross NPAs surged to 11.4% from 2.8% YoY, with net NPAs at 5.0%, driven by stress in the micro-banking/JLG segment where collection efficiency dropped from 96% to 82%. Total provisions jumped 228% YoY to ₹411 crore. On the positive side, total deposits grew 18.3% YoY to ₹21,489 crore, retail term deposits rose 33.7%, and secured loans now account for 45% of the portfolio (up from 35%). CRAR stood at 19.6% and banking outlets expanded to 1,099 across 27 states.
Shareholders face a clearly negative quarter with losses, sharp asset quality deterioration, and compressed profitability (RoAA at -3.4%, RoAE at -33.8%). The bank's pivot away from unsecured micro-banking toward secured retail assets and improved deposit mix is a positive structural signal, but near-term stock sentiment is likely to remain weak until asset quality stabilizes and the bank returns to profitability.
