Utkarsh Small Finance Bank reported a net loss of Rs. 239 crores for Q1 FY'26, hit by stress in its microfinance (JLG) portfolio due to MFIN Guardrail 2.0 implementation from April 1, 2025 and elevated carry-forward delinquencies. The JLG book shrank 7% during the quarter, dragging overall loan book growth to a modest 2.3% YoY. However, non-JLG segments performed strongly: MSME loans grew 46% YoY to Rs. 4,001 crores, housing loans grew 30% YoY to Rs. 929 crores, and CE & CV loans rose 17% YoY to Rs. 1,179 crores. Secured loans rose to 45% of book from 35% a year ago. Collection efficiency dropped to 82% from 96.2%, with PCR on the MFI portfolio at 62%. Capital adequacy remained comfortable at 19.6%, with surplus liquidity of Rs. 3,900 crore and LCR at 239%. Management is planning a Rs. 750 crore equity raise and has secured approvals for the reverse merger of its holding company.
Near-term sentiment may stay weak due to the quarterly loss and continued MFI stress, but the bank's strong non-MFI growth, improving deposit franchise and medium-term guidance for 15%+ ROE and 8.5%+ NIM offer a constructive outlook. The planned equity raise and reverse merger could be key catalysts to watch, though near-term profitability remains uncertain until JLG normalizes in 3-4 months.
