Utkarsh Small Finance Bank has published a public notice in Financial Express and Jansatta on March 27, 2026, inviting Expression of Interest (EOI) from ARCs for the sale of its stressed loan portfolio. The bank is offering two pools of unsecured stressed microfinance (MFI) loans with an aggregate principal outstanding of Rs. 1,490.99 crore (Pool 1: Rs. 1,016.24 crore across 1,36,832 accounts; Pool 2: Rs. 474.75 crore across 2,92,030 accounts). The total reserve price for both pools is Rs. 195.29 crore, with starting counter-bid prices of Rs. 139.76 crore and Rs. 65.30 crore respectively. The sale will follow a Swiss Challenge Method, with binding bids due by 10:00 AM on March 30, 2026. Payment terms allow 100% cash upfront or a mix of cash and security receipts with at least ~47% upfront cash.
The move signals the bank is actively working to clean up its stressed MFI assets and free up capital, which is positive for long-term asset quality. However, the steep gap between the Rs. 1,490.99 crore principal outstanding and the Rs. 195.29 crore reserve price (roughly 13% recovery) highlights significant write-offs already priced in, which is unlikely to move the stock sharply in the short term.
