Adani Ports (APSEZ) has operationalised India's first Port of Refuge (PoR), a designated facility for ships in distress to seek shelter, protect lives, and limit environmental damage. The initiative is backed by a tripartite MoU with SMIT Salvage (part of Dutch firm Royal Boskalis Westminster) and the Maritime Emergency Response Centre (MERC), bringing global salvage expertise to India. Two ports have been designated: Dighi Port on the west coast (serving Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf routes) and Gopalpur Port on the east coast (serving Bay of Bengal and Malacca Strait traffic). The facilities will offer salvage, wreck removal, firefighting, pollution containment, and emergency coordination services. The move aligns India with international maritime conventions. APSEZ currently handles around 27-28% of India's port cargo volumes with 633 million tonnes capacity, targeting 1 billion tonnes by 2030.
This is a strategic infrastructure and branding move that strengthens APSEZ's positioning in global shipping corridors, but it is not a direct revenue-generating order. Shareholders may view it positively as it enhances the company's value proposition, though near-term financial impact is likely limited.
