Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has disclosed an acquisition of 26.26 crore shares (2.901%) in Central Bank of India through market purchase on May 22, 2026. Prior to this acquisition, LIC held 3.158% (28.59 crore shares). After the purchase, LIC's total holding increased to 6.059% (54.85 crore shares). This is a disclosure under Regulation 29(1) of SEBI SAST Regulations 2011 for persons holding more than 5% shares. LIC clarified it does not belong to the Promoter/Promoter group of Central Bank of India.
LIC crossing the 5% threshold signals institutional accumulation in the public sector bank. While still well below the 25% trigger point for open offers, continuous buying by a major institutional investor like LIC could be viewed positively by markets as a vote of confidence in the bank's fundamentals.
