The President of India, acting through the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance (the Promoter of Central Bank of India), sold 73,16,12,102 equity shares representing 8.08% of the bank's total paid-up equity share capital through an Offer for Sale (OFS) mechanism on May 22-25, 2026. Before the sale, the promoter held 808,03,91,687 shares (89.27%). After the sale, holding reduced to 734,87,79,585 shares (81.19%). The OFS also included an oversubscription option for an additional 4% stake and an employee offer of 0.1% of share capital. This represents a significant reduction in government holding in the public sector bank.
The promoter stake sale of 8.08% reduces government ownership to 81.19%, signalling continued divestment by the Union Government in public sector banks. This may lead to increased public shareholding and potential stock price volatility as market absorbs the shares sold.
