IDFC First Bank received ₹514.82 crore from the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC) under the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) Scheme. This amount pertains to the bank's microfinance portfolio comprising loans to women entrepreneurs under Joint Liability Groups, sanctioned up to March 2025. The payout represents 100% of the claim submitted by the bank. Since the bank had already created provisions for these MFI defaults in prior periods, this amount will result in a write-back of those earlier provisions rather than fresh income. Currently, about 97% of all new microfinance loan originations from January 2024 onwards are covered under this guarantee scheme.
For shareholders, this is a positive development as the bank recovers money it had already provisioned for, which should improve profitability through provision write-back. The 100% claim settlement also validates the robustness of the bank's MFI portfolio coverage under CGFMU.
